Burgundy Fleur-de-Lis? Mixed Reactions to Jersey Honoring Québec Nordiques

On November 16, Colorado Avalanche unveiled their Reverse Retro jersey. This was in collaboration with Adidas and the NHL in releasing a collection of jerseys that blend the past and present designs for all 31 teams.

The Colorado Avalanche’s jersey is a throwback to 1972 when the team was previously known as the Québec Nordiques in the World Hockey Association (WHA) before joining the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1979.

Originally based in Québec City, the Nordiques were well-known for their powder blue and white uniforms. Although, from 1973-75, they adopted a dark royal blue color. The fleur-de-lis was first added to the uniforms for the 1974-75 season.

Why I Started This Blog

I love stories, specifically those stories that take us back into our history and fill us with meaning in our present. My family ancestry is primarily Franco-American, also described as French-Canadian heritage.

From a young age, I began a mission to piece my family’s known history together: not just stories of individuals, but of our Franco-American story as a whole.

I’m originally from New Hampshire, where my French-Canadian immigrant ancestors settled. But I primarily grew up in Iowa, where some French presence is known but my heritage was not common knowledge at all. Nobody around me knew what a “Franco-American” was.

What the Heck Is a Franco-American?

Have you ever been asked, “So what’s your background?” 

And if you answered with, “I’m Franco-American.” 

Most likely, you’ve gotten this response: 

“……what is that?”

This is what I hear every time I am asked this question. No joke. 

Even in New England, the term Franco-American is unrecognizable among many people. Which is funny, because our community used to be well-known for their work in the textile mills back in the day; say 50+ years ago.
